Thursday, November 12th 2009

Here I am at school, while everyone else at NSCC is on ' November Break' :(

I did get yesterday off! I like the fact that the campus was closed, because then I didn't feel guilty for not being there.

This morning I went for a walk with my Mom in Point Pleasant Park.. then came to school.
At school I captured my footage for my report. I ran into 12, 000 technical difficulties.. it's hard when not many people are around to help. So for today, I just made sure everything was captured and then I saved it to my external hard drive and I will come in tomorrow and start to edit. Once I get my report edited, the rest is simple... it takes so much weight off my shoulders! I have been meaning to sit down and write for the past couple days but I find I have writers block. I need to just sit down and start scratching stuff onto paper and coming up with something.

I booked out a digital recorder for the night, going to do an interview with a hockey player who plays for the local Molson Canadian League.. for all ages. ( all ages as in.. 20-40)
A lot of players that have been on Junior A teams play in it - as well as their friends, relatives, anyone!

One of my sports stories for this weeks Waterfront Weekly is on the hockey team itself, so I figured I may as well make a radio interview out of it. Radio interviews are hard to get, a lot of people back out on you, or you end up getting sick, or you forget, or Waterfront weekly gets in the way.

I got my internship at CTV! I know, I already work there. This time I will be doing my internship in the newsroom though - which is different from my last internship with Breakfast Televison! I won't have to get up so early :)

Right now I am at school waiting for my drive, I am headed home. Going to clean up a bit, then sit down and force myself to write my scripts.

I also have to call Greengym tomorrow and book an interview with their media relations person... to get a clip for my report on the outdoor fitness facility up the road from school. It's a pretty cool spot! I went there the other day with Steve Berry, ( camera man ) and we shot my footage and got a clip from an elderly lady who was there working out. It was an unexpected clip, because at first no one was there, and then she showed up and said she would speak on camera! (this is rare.. most people hate the camera) So, it turned out awesome!

I have to go right now, going to head home and get writing!

" The Falling Man "

After watching the documentary on " The Falling Man", I now have to explain which codes it violated in the RTNDA Code of Ethics .. I think.

The documentary was quite captivating and showed a whole new side to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

I belive, when researchers tried to identify the falling man, they interfeared with the 'privacy' code. I believe this because the photo was very graphic.. and left a lot of images left to the imagination - of what happened to the man after the photo was taken. I feel that having the picture published was interfearing with the man's privacy, and rights as a person.

In the journey of finding out who the man was, another code that was violated was definetly accuracy. The media had identified a man, and then said it wasn't him, then attempted to identify him as someone else soon after. They should not have published the first story at all and just waited until they knew exactly what was going on - with no doubts.

I also think that this photo being published violated the respect code.. because, the picture was very disturbing and all of the pictures taken.. a lot were jumpers, and who wants to see that? A lot of people found it very disrespectful and did not understand why the media released it as a huge centerfold print.

All in all, the documentary was very interesting..
I hope I did this assignmeng correctly..

-How I plan to include diversity in my media work-

I plan to incorporate diversity in my media work by looking for story ideas to do on a diverse topic. I also plan to do 'streeter's, and while doing them interview all diverse groups of people, and try and include everyone.
I don't find that it is difficult to incorporate diversity in your reports and stories, because there are lots of diverse people everywhere.
So far I feel I have been diverse in what I have done.. however there is no such thing as too much diversity!

No Strike?

Well,

Sorry for the late response.. it has been caused by technical difficulties as well as the entire school year taking a 360 degree turn around!
People definetly did not expect a deal to be reached about the strike. All of the sudden, a day before.. and boom. A deal.
I can't lie, I definetly would not have cried to administration if we had gotten a couple days off. However, the strike was estimated to last a lot longer then that, had it happened.
We are just getting ready to rehearse Waterfront Weekly this week... Putting the show together is always stressful and frusterating. It feels so good to have your report done, and edited.. but then its back to the grind next week - again.
I feel I work well under pressure, I tend to just take one day at a time and do what I can. The time seems to pass quicker this way and before you know it - it's over!
It would be nice if we got a full rehersal of the show today. That never seems to happen.. which is no body's fault.. we are just learning and this is a lot of work!
Tonight I plan to go home and relax, I am in radio news next week. There is a new thing in the radio studio that records all of the shows.. this is great because all of my news reads will be logged and recorded no matter what. So that's good, because I am thinking about doing my 2 week internship at a Radio station - I enjoy news radio!
I have to go right now... Television calls...

Pardon me if I fall asleep while posting this blog.. I am on antibiotics galore. Throughout the day they make me feel invincible... then once the evening hits, I'm drowsy and spacey. I have not been in school the past 2 days, and my cable got disconnected.. So.. what have I been up to? Not much besides laying in bed and checking chronicleherald.ca, cbc.ca and news957.com - constantly.
I'm going a bit shack-wacky and am eager to get back to school and back to routine. I hate not having anything to do.
So, what is going on in the news that interests me? To be honest I am a little sick of hearing about the Bishop Lahey case... basically I feel that, he was charged, and that's it. Researching into everything doesn't change the fact that he did what he did and faced the charges he faced. His next court appearance on Nov. 4th will be interesting I guess.
I have been doing radio news reads. They are pretty fun, my whole family has been tuning in and listening.. which makes it even more fun because the pressure is really on!
The NSCC Strike is looming, I keep checking my email like a maniac... the meeting to choose a strike date was tonight. I read on the internet that the government says they will not interfere if there is a strike.. that concerns me.. because before I felt that if they went on strike for a week, then whatever.. not a big deal. Now I feel like if the government said they are not going to interfere.. that means when the expected strike does happen.. it could go on forever.. which is NOT good.
I support the teachers for wanting to strike because they deserve the 2.9% pay increase, they work really hard and definetly should have it. I guess what is ' meant to be will happen '....
When I was sick the past couple days and was stressed that I was missing school and wasn't feeling well... my Mom said this quote to me...

" Everything is okay in the end, if it's not okay, it's not the end."

Weekly Blog - last day of september!

With today being the last day of September, I am glad it was warm and sunny :)
I have been doing news reads all week and having a lot of fun with it. Although, I find it hard to get the writing part done quickly and find myself stressed about getting it prepared.. all day!
But I guess that's industry for you. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback about my reads, which makes me more confident - seeing as this is a new experience! I find I have new opinions about radio and enjoy it a lot more then I thought I would!
I still feel as if I have to improve a lot on my writing, but I trust that will come with time.
A lot of people are stressed at school because we are really starting to get into the groove of things, I find this year is FLYING by.
I was stressed the other day and my Mom told me " take it one day at a time." So that's what I do, I try not to think too far ahead.. and just accomplish what I can each day and go from there. So far, this has been helping quite a bit!
" If you think about step 10, when you're only on step 2.. you will never get to step 10."
Those are other words of wisdom that I find I drilling into my brain, frequently.
So, I have experienced the radio side of Broadcast Journalism.. and am anxious to see the Waterfront Weekly side.. and the process, how they differ, and which I will prefer and pursue a career in.
Right now I am going to go cook some rice and vegetables.. I'm starving, radio news takes a lot out of you!

Diversity in the Media

I watched CBC News Nova Scotia @ 5, newscast on 09/21/09 to look for diversity in their clips.
Out of all the reports, there were only 2 diverse people- there was one black child, and one french man. I was very surprised, and almost wished I would have watched CTV instead because they have a different news layout which I think would include more clips throughout the hour. CBC's news cast format is very odd, and full of the same report re-runs at least 3 times throughout the show which makes it very frusterating to watch. I prefer to watch CTV Atlantic because they show full reports and include the public more. Although CBC did not include many diverse clips from the public, they do have more diverse reporters then CTV.. a total of 3. Which gives them strength in some area I suppose.

Anyways, that's all for now..
In closing I will continue to watch CTV for the rest of the year.

Blog Following Assignment for School

The blog that I chose to follow is on this website, and the blog is written by a woman by the name of is Iva Messy.
Iva appears to be a young woman who blogs as part of her profession. I believe this because, she has question and answer activaties for options, and a lot of video blogging that include credit listings to multimedia companies, therefore I believe she is making some sort of profit from this website.
Iva seems to have a vivid imagination, and blogs about a lot of different things, everything from exercise, to helpful tips. I am wondering if she has some sort of journalism degree or took english classes because she is a very good writer and you can almost hear her voice when you read her work. She has a lot of energy and she is very witty and funny.
What I like about her blog is that it is not focused on one subject or only her thoughts, she has a wide variety of interesting things to read and learn about. Her page is very colorful and fun and has quotes of wisdom scattered throughout it, which makes it attractive to the eye.
What I don't like about her blog is that I could not seem to find any history about where she is from, she has so many blogs, they are hard to get through. I would like to know some background information like where she goes to school, what inspires her to blog, and where she gets her ideas. Also, some of her topics are a little too far fetched and random for my liking.
I will probably continue to follow this blog though, because is definetly has a lot of useful information and funny tips.

SCHOOL BLOG

Okay so I haven't written here in a while, but now have to start a blog for school.. so I may as well use this one! :)

I am currently in the newsroom at school, working away.. rewriting news stories, my favorite!
I enjoy the writing aspect of this course.

Last night I started working the late news at CTV, it is 0dd going from early early mornings to the late night shift. I got to meet Bruce Frisko, he is pretty interesting - seems very knowledgeable about what he does. He does his job well.

Another night news shift tonight then done for the weekend.. at CTV that is, on Saturday I have to go to Sheet Harbour for a wedding, then Sunday I work a double shift at Your Father's Moustache.. then back to school Monday!

I have a radio interview next week, I find those stressful to complete, not sure why! It's pretty a pretty simple procedure, I think its the fear of not being very familiar with the radio equipment since its been 4 months or more since I used anything. Hopefully I will contact someone and have a great interview... we will see :)

That's about all for now, I am off to observe other people's blogs and see whats going on inside their minds!

Truly,

Brynn

..fire..fire..fire..

FIRE.. in Halifax. Specifically in Herring Cove...
Adam is a volunteer firefighter.. he was there all last night.. and may have to go back tonight.
Some friends have been evacuated.. horrible.. I could not imagine.
Homes have been completely destroyed.
I went for a walk this morning with my Mom in Point Pleasant Park....We couldn't see any smoke, its definitely not as visible as it was yesterday..Yesterday was insane. Smoke covered almost the entire city from a satilite view. Scary.
Today I am not doing much, maybe go out to eat with my Roommates girlfriend Belinia - she is from West Africa.. Speaks mostly french, very nice girl though. I want to show her around Halifax! :)

Right now I am catching up on some sleep I suppose.. everyone else is asleep.. We went to watch Midget Wrestling last night.
I ran into my long lost best friend Megan. Missed her so much, we have both been so busy with our lives.. it was really nice to hang out with her for the night and drink. We said we will try our best to keep in touch from now on.. Hopefully that works out.

Chelsea moves today, into town. Just like me.
I may go over later for some wine & snacks? May not.. who knows at this point? Adam and I were supposed to hang out yesterday but he got called to the fire, and tonight he may have to go back.. like I already said.. So I don't know when I will see him again because I have to work double shifts all weekend..
Maybe Saturday night for his cousin Gordie's Birthday? Gordie never comes around for Adam's Birthday.. I don't feel as though we should have to go downtown and spend money for his sake. And I work the next morning at 11 too... Its patio season now... the patio at my restaurant opens this weekend.. going to be insane.

Anyways.. going to sign off for now..
Sleepy.

Love.

new living quarters...

I have moved recently. Into the busy streets of downtown Halifax, I now reside in a tiny attic room on a quiet side street.. close to my internship for school.

It's called renting a room. It's definitely different. You don't know your roommates - seeing as you found them on Kijiji... Met with them once, then moved yourself in.

How are my roommates? My roommates are french. All of them. Some french from Canada, some french from West Africa. I, on the other hand, am not french.. whatsoever. Maybe come September I will be bilingual? Who knows.

The room is nice. Spacious. Real hardwood floors. Shelves built into the wall - ( I Love Shelves!)
I brought with me a tiny single bed, an army cot if you would. It's on a metal frame with wheels, and the mattress sinks when I lay on it. Yesterday, the entire thing collapsed. It was funny.
My bed from home is much to large to move for only 2 months.

Last night was my first night in my new room. Had an okay sleep.. kept waking up thinking I was at home and had to keep reminding myself I was in my ' other ' home now. Know that feeling I'm talking about?

Woke up this morning and scrubbed the bathroom and kitchen. Oh.. I forgot to mention that there are 6 of us who live here, and only 2 of us are female. Therefore, you can imagine the state of the bathroom...

The bathroom is small and quaint. There is only one, for 6 people... yup.
The sink was dusty and toothpaste stained and the toilet was as well. Took an SOS pad to that! And now it's pretty and shiny.

There are also an abundance of playboy magazines sitting quietly on the floor of the bathroom? Not something I'm used to seeing at home.. haha.

I'm now finished cleaning.. and thinking about how I am going to spend my day.
I need to go to the store and buy: a toothbrush (forgot myne at home)
facewash( forgot that too )
a hairbrush ( yup.. forgot that as well.)

At 3:30 I get to see my handsome boy.
We are hanging out tonight, thank goodness. I miss him.. haven't seen him in a couple days.. besides yesterday, but he was only here to help me move and then he left.

Anyways, tonight should be fun and will consist of cuddling, eating, and bad choice in rented movies.

Love.
